Lasting Memory

When we received a gift for the university archives in the mail — a vintage Green Jacket and hat from a member of the former North Texas spirit and service group — we asked for a memory to go with it.

My first assignment as a Green Jacket was one of the most memorable. North Texas hosted a large competition of several high school bands, with Green Jackets (highly respected symbols of service on campus) as guides. We looked resplendent, they in their crisp uniforms and freshly polished shoes and I in my brand new Green Jacket and perky hat.

Unlike the previous (rainy) day, contest day was sunny and bright, filled with excitement. Having carefully researched possible routes, I confidently led them across a grassy meadow I knew to be the most direct route.

I became dimly aware of murmurings but ignored them until I noticed the director looking at me with dismay. My eyes followed his as he looked down at their once spotless shoes, now water-splotched from the still damp grass! Everything from that moment is a blank.

Gulf Coast gala

The UNT Gulf Coast chapter of the North Texas Exes will be returning to the Piatto Ristorante in the Houston Galleria area for its fifth annual spring scholarship gala April 15.

Houston attorney Richard O. Faulk (’77) will be recognized for his support of his alma mater when he receives the 2007 Martha Turner Award of Distinction as outstanding Gulf Coast alumnus of UNT.

Faulk, who holds a bachelor of music degree in composition from North Texas and a law degree from SMU, is head of the Environmental Practice Group of the law firm Gardere Wynne Sewell. He has served as lead counsel for toxic tort, arguing some of the cases before the Supreme Court.

He and his wife, Candace, are donating $50,000 over a five-year period to support the Faulk Scholarship program in the composition division of the College of Music.

For more information about the scholarship gala, contact Robert Morgan (’63, ’65 M.M.) at (713) 729-1918.
