Jeff Fortino, Largo, Fla., has received the Surgical Sales Representative of the Year Award from Healthpoint Ltd. for his work in the company during 2002. He also received the Triseptin Product Award for his sales of that product. He has been a member of Healthpoint's sales team for more than three years.

Harvey 'Hank' Harwell, Beaufort, S.C., and his wife, Eunice, are captains with the Salvation Army. They were transferred from Concord, N.C., to Beaufort in June. Harwell attended North Texas from 1985 to 1990.

Alan Steen (M.S.), Roanoke, was named as the new administrator of the Texas Alcoholic Beverage Commission in August. He most recently served as the director of juvenile corrections for the Texas Youth Commission, where he worked for 17 years.

Melody Little Hail, Heath, gave birth to her second child, Sydney Lauren, March 6. She and her husband, Chris, work at their family-owned business, Rockwall County Abstract & Title Co.

Lis Melendez Shanks, Leander, and her husband, Glenn, celebrated the birth of their second child, Gregory Guess, in June. Their son Hunter is 2.

Lauri McAfee Etheridge, Austin, was co-chair of the first Austin International Adoption Fair in November, designed to give people considering adoption the opportunity to meet with adoption agencies, social workers, medical personnel and other adoptive families.

Julie Michelle Johnston ('02 M.P.A.), Oak Point, is serving as city manager for Oak Point.

Tracey Martinez, Richardson, was named an associate of Harris Design Inc., where she has worked for 10 years. She is a licensed interior designer in Texas and a member of the International Interior Design Association.

Nicole Barzilla Blakeman, Rockwall, has been hired as the head volleyball coach for Rockwall High School after eight years as head coach at Clear Lake High School.

Arminda Santiago (M.A.), Quezon City, Philippines, is an associate professor at the University of the Philippines Film Institute.

Hugh Seagraves, Dallas, has started a new business, VoiceMonkey, a web service that allows users to add voice messages to e-mail and web sites, among other features.

Marine Capt. Frank Simmons, Virginia Beach, Va., commanded a platoon of the First Fleet Antiterrorism Security Team Company, which worked with Navy SEALs and Polish Special Forces to secure gas and oil platforms in the Arabian Gulf during the opening minutes of the war with Iraq.

Keira Hausler and Brandon Greene ('96), San Antonio, were married May 24 in Fredericksburg. They work as independent consultants and plan to attend the University of Texas Health Science Center in San Antonio in the dental and medical programs.

James K. Hill, Carrollton, has been named assistant principal at The Colony High School. He was formerly a coach and teacher at Lewisville High School North and Hedrick Middle School.

Norman Nieves ('98, '02 M.S.) and Christy Coffman-Nieves ('98), Denton, gave birth to a daughter, Kristen Lindsay, on Feb. 20. Christy teaches senior English at Lake Dallas High School, and Norman is the head hall director of Maple Hall at UNT.

Staff Sgt. Gregory D. Ridlington, Alexandria, Va., was a featured soloist in the U.S. Marine Band's 205th anniversary concert in July. The saxophone solo came during one of guest conductor John Williams' most recent compositions, Escapades for Alto Saxophone and Orchestra from the movie Catch Me If You Can. Ridlington joined the band in 1999.

Tara Stopfel ('99 M.Ed.), Cincinnati, Ohio, was hired to direct and develop the new Center for Exploratory Studies at the University of Cincinnati, which is designed to help college students choose a major. She worked for UNT's Department of Housing and Residence Life from 1992 to 1999.

Greg Barnes, Minneapolis, Minn., received his master of music in choral conducting from the University of Minnesota in 2002. He teaches in the Minneapolis area and is married to former UNT student Anne Baruch, who is interim assistant director of the University of Minnesota School of Music. They have been married for 10 years and have one son.

Matthew D. Curtis, Austin, was campaign manager for Brewster McCracken, who won an Austin city council race with 66 percent of the vote this June. Curtis now serves as McCracken's chief of staff.

Nathan Newberry, Leander, and his wife, Angela, are the parents of a daughter, Zoe Elizabeth, born June 20 in Austin.

Ann Lovett-Fitzsimons (Ph.D.), Gainesville, is principal of Sanger ISD's special education Challenge Program, where she plans to add arts and vocational programs to the curriculum.

James Hopper (M.Ed.), Sundown, was hired as the new high school principal for Hamilton ISD. He has 20 years of experience in education, including serving as principal at Sundown, Muenster and Lake Dallas schools.

Condoa Parrent ('99 M.S.), Gainesville, serves as the dean of student services for the three-campus system of North Central Texas College.

Stephanie Rahmandar Rozell, Fort Yukon, Alaska, is working as a reading specialist in Fort Yukon, a native village on the Yukon River. She recently received her master of arts degree in reading specialization from Hardin-Simmons University.

Lea Steele (M.B.A.), Hillsboro, director of member and staff services for HILCO Electric Cooperative, has accepted a board position in the Texas Member Services Association, a statewide organization made up of approximately 70 electric cooperatives.

Toby W. Osburn (M.Ed.), Rochester, Mich., was named vice president of student services at Rochester College in July. Previously he was dean of student services at North Central Texas College.

Roxanne Phillips, St. Louis, Mo., received her master of fine arts degree in printmaking and drawing from Washington University in St. Louis.

Rhonda Snively Dees, Arlington, and her husband, John, celebrated their second wedding anniversary Nov. 17. The two, who met in the fifth grade, were born the same day of the same year in the same hospital in Dallas. Rhonda is district scheduler for U.S. Rep. Sam Johnson of Plano. John is an art teacher at Truman Middle School in Grand Prairie.

Tim Smith (M.Ed.), Wolfeboro Falls, N.H., is owner of Jack Mountain Bushcraft and Guide Service, where he teaches courses in traditional wilderness skills and survival and serves as a guide for canoe and snowshoe trips.
