Joe Bitner (Ed.D.), Mandeville, La., was named Professor Emeritus of education at Southeastern Louisiana University in Hammond, La., after teaching for 30 years in the education and educational technology departments. He retired in 2006.

Deena J. Smith Harkins (’80 M.Ed.), Tequesta, Fla., a corporate training manager and watercolorist, started a part-time art business, Wildlife in Watercolors. She is a member of the Mid-Southern Watercolorists and Lighthouse Center for the Arts in Tequesta and an art committee member for the town of Jupiter, Fla.

*Mark Metzler, Gainesville, president of Felderhoff Production Co., became chair of the board of the Texas Alliance of Energy Producers in April. He began his career with Arthur Andersen in Dallas and joined Felderhoff Brothers Drilling in 1984 as chief financial officer.

Pamela Garza, Tyler, was selected by the Texas Association for College Admission Counseling to represent Texas at the National Legislative Conference in Washington, D.C., and was recognized by the Tyler ISD board of directors for her selection. She met with members of Congress in March as an advocate for higher education.

Sidney D. ‘Dave’ Rogers, Beaumont, sports editor for the Baytown Sun, won the 2007 Fred Hartman Excellence in Sportswriting Award from the Texas Daily Newspaper Association. He previously worked for the Beaumont Enterprise and Port Arthur News.
