Norval F. Pohl, UNT president, 2000-2006

Norval F. Pohl became UNT’s 13th president on Oct. 15, 2000. He first joined the UNT community in January 1999 when the Board of Regents selected him at the conclusion of an intensive national search to recruit a provost and executive vice president with the ability and potential to become president of the university.

The regents appointed Pohl as chief executive officer of the university after deciding in September 2000 to separate the offices of the system chancellor and university president

Before joining UNT, Pohl served four years as vice president for finance and administration at the University of Nevada-Las Vegas. Prior to that, he served as dean of the College of Business and Economics and professor of management at UNLV and dean of the College of Business Administration and professor of business administration at Northern Arizona University.

He earned his bachelor’s degree in psychology in 1965 and his M.B.A. in management in 1969, both from California State University-Fresno. He earned his doctorate in quantitative systems at Arizona State University in 1973. Pohl and his wife, Barbikay Bissell Pohl, have two adult sons.

Pohl’s major accomplishments as president of UNT include:

  • An enrollment increase from more than 27,000 students to more than 32,000 students. During the same period, the university’s Latino enrollment increased by 48 percent and African American enrollment increased by 43 percent.
  • Financial aid award increases from $57.8 million to $172.2 million
  • An average SAT score increase of 33 points, to 1102
  • An annual giving increase from $4.7 million to $13.4 million
  • Acquisition of the Texas Instruments property in north Denton and its conversion to the UNT Research Park
  • Establishment of a College of Engineering and the creation of a permanent home for UNT engineering at the UNT Research Park
  • Construction of a new state-of-the-art Chemistry Building
  • Conversion of the Honors Program to the UNT Honors College
  • Planning and construction of UNT’s Student Recreation Center
  • Acquisition of the Liberty Christian School property (now the Mean Green Village) and the subsequent development of the location for women’s athletic programs and university support services
  • Development of UNT’s Eagle Point area, which is the location of the Athletic Center, Victory Hall and the Waranch Tennis Center
  • Development and opening of three residential facilities — Victory Hall, Traditions Hall and Sorority Row, the home of five campus sorority chapters
  • Construction of UNT’s first new wellness facility since 1958
  • Construction of a new Urban Observatory Center
  • Overhaul and modernization of the university’s computing system
  • Development and implementation of a shuttle bus system connecting the main campus with Eagle Point, the Research Park and large apartment complexes in Denton
  • Helping the North Texas Exes, UNT’s alumni association, establish a new permanent home — “the university’s living room” — in the Gateway Center
