Brian K. Allen
(’94 M.S.), Burleson, is a computer science teacher at Trinity Valley Community College in Terrell. Allen began his teaching career at Cedar Hill Middle School and taught there for two years before moving to Athens High School.

Sherry Rhoades Hazan-Cohen, Plano, is president and founder of Dream Achieve, a financial planning firm in Plano. One of only 27 National Association of Personal Financial Advisors members in Texas, she was featured in the August 2001 cover story of Newsweek.

Michel Madeira, San Antonio, was promoted to director of North American sales for Sulzer Dental. He and his wife, Karen, also recently celebrated the birth of their second child, Cade Hanson Madeira.

Shelley O. Carrol
, Houston, teamed up with former college roommate and Dallas-Fort Worth-area musician and producer Frederick Nichelson (’86) to release his second CD, A Distant Star, this fall after returning from a tour of South America with the Duke Ellington Orchestra. Carrol performs throughout Texas and the Southwest with his own quartet.

Juan Juarez, Laredo, started the master of fine arts program in painting and drawing at the University of Wisconsin in Milwaukee. Juarez is also a recipient of the Advanced Opportunity Program Fellowship in the School of Visual Arts at the university.

Emily M. Klement (’94 M.Ed.), Muenster, is the director of North Central Texas College’s Bowie campus. She had served as the school counselor for Muenster ISD for five years.

Frank J. Miller (Ed.D.), Pittsburg, Kan., received the College of Education Excellence in Teaching Award at Pittsburg State University in Kansas, where he is an associate professor of curriculum and instruction. Miller also is coordinator of the graduate and undergraduate early childhood education programs.

F. Allen Powell, Conway, Ark., was appointed assistant professor of hospitality administration at Arkansas Tech University in Russellville, Ark.

Shannon S. Ricles, Yorktown, Va., is the coordinating producer for the NASA “Why?” Files, a distance learning program produced by NASA Langley Research Center in Hampton, Va., for students in grades three through five.

Derrick White (’97 M.F.A.), Tyler, is a full-time faculty member in art at Tyler Junior College. White is the former gallery director at Tarrant County Community College-Southeast and adjunct instructor at Eastfield College of the Dallas County Community College District. An exhibiting artist, White is showing his work at the NRH Gallery at North Richland Hills and at the Tyler Museum of Art.

Gregory L. Cody
, Seattle, is an IT acquisition manager for the Microsoft Worldwide Technology Acquisition Group. Before joining Microsoft, Cody had worked for Preston Gates & Ellis LLP since 1998.

James C. Sorrels, Oklahoma City, teaches French and Spanish at Casady School in Oklahoma City. He is also researching new methods of second language acquisition.

Janet G. Abbott
(’98 M.A.), Washington, D.C., is pursuing a doctorate in art history at Pennsylvania State University and was awarded the 2001-02 Black Entertainment Television Fellowship for Art History to study the Barnett-Aden Collection of Art in Washington, D.C.

Kristi A. Gary, Houston, married Douglas E. Page on Sept. 15. She is the assistant director of development at Second Baptist School in Houston.

Shelly Henley Kelly (M.S.), Houston, won the Society of American Archivists’ Hamer-Kegan award for her book Through a Night of Horrors: Voices from the 1900 Galveston Storm. Kelly is the archivist at the University of Houston-Clear Lake.

Paul G. Nordstrom, Truth or Consequences, N.M., has served as a U.S. Border Patrol agent in New Mexico for the past six years. In September, he was assigned to “Operation Safe Passage” to help the Border Patrol protect Logan Airport in Boston. He and his wife, Michelle, have a 4-year-old daughter.

Frank L. Simmons, Virginia Beach, Va., serves as a captain in the U.S. Marine Corps and is stationed in Norfolk, Va. He is the platoon commander with 1st Fleet Anti-Terrorism Security Team Company, Marine Corps Security Force Battalion. Simmons is engaged to Kelly Richardson; they plan to marry in July.

Brenda K. Ritz (’99 M.A.), Denton, has worked at UNT since 1991 and was recently promoted to videoconference coordinator in the Center for Distributed Learning.

Jennifer S. Cowley
, (M.P.A.), Columbus, Ohio, is an assistant professor of city and regional planning at Ohio State University.

Carl L. Donovan (’98 M.B.A., ’00 M.S.), Austin, is a financial planner at MetLife Financial Services in Austin.

Stephanie A. Rahmandar, Abilene, married Brian Rozell on Dec. 16. She teaches second grade in the Abilene-Wylie ISD.

Kristen W. Escovedo
, Benbrook, is the public information officer for the Eagle Mountain-Saginaw ISD. Her husband, Richard F. Escovedo (’99), is the public relations manager for Nolan Catholic High School in Fort Worth. They recently built their first house.

Amy A. Lynn, Flower Mound, is an investment analyst at Granite Properties, a real estate investment, management and development firm in Dallas. She previously worked at Basic Capital Management and Mohr Partners. Lynn is a certified commercial investment member and received her real estate license in 1998.

Kebharu H. Smith, Tyler, graduated from the Thurgood Marshall School of Law and passed the bar exam.
