Junior Mean Green Club

Junio Mean Green Club members forming a spirit line

Fans 15 and under are invited to join the Junior Mean Green Club, an organization that lets kids get up close to the football and basketball players. In addition to free Beth Marie's ice cream and entry into the fun zone with face painting and photos with Scrappy, members get to form the spirit line on the field as the Mean Green returns for the second half of the game.

The children of Maureen McGuinness ('97 M.Ed., '03 Ed.D.) — ages 5 to 11 — are members of the Junior Mean Green Club (the oldest for eight years).

"They are really immersed in student life here," she says.

Also, each child is assigned an athlete, one for football season and another for basketball. The players end up being their special buddies through the season, with opportunities for photos and autographs.

Maureen McGuinness and her children enjoy a game.

"My kids love to cheer for their athlete's number," McGuinness says.

Working in the UNT housing department for 11 years, she says her children have helped build Homecoming floats and have walked in the parade.

"This is my UNT family and I want them to see that university life is important," she says.
