Conquering the American Wilderness: The Triumph of European Warfare in the Colonial Northeast bookcoverConquering the American Wilderness: The Triumph of European Warfare in the Colonial Northeast by Guy Chet, assistant professor of history (University of Massachusetts Press). In this study of military tactics and strategy before the War of Independence, Chet challenges the belief that conditions in the New World and the success of Indian tactics forced colonists to abandon European methods of warfare and develop a new "American" style, combining firearms with guerrilla-like tactics. His study shows that the colonies' military successes, even during the War of Independence, resulted from a reliance on European military conventions.
